Aurangabad has always been a journey down historical chronicles, legends and history. It has been a delight among royalty, invaders, photographers, tourists, painters, writers and archaeologists. This city has always donned several hats. It has been a home to various ethnicities down memory lane and it falls in the district of Aurangabad. The Moghul emperor Aurangzeb named it Aurangabad which means ‘Built by the Throne’. It wonderful relics of the past: the UNESCO world-heritage sites of the world-famous Ajanta and Ellora caves, BibikaMaqbara and the famous gates. It is rightly called a City of Gates.
A peek into Aurangabad history: it was founded in 1610 AD by Malik Ambar the Prime Minister of Ahmadnagar under the reign of MurtazaNizam Shah. Aurangabad is also referred to as KhujistaBunyad by historians. BibiKaMaqbara was constructed by Azam Khan who was Aurangzeb’s son in the memory of his mother, DilrasBano Begum. Later a general from the Moghul army, Nizam-ul-MulkAsifJah II founded his own dynasty in the Deccan; one of the descendants shifted his capital to Hyderabad. It became part of the Indian Union in 1956. Note that it was active during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.
Coming to the current age, it has been viewed as one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 11,89,376. Most residents speak Marathi, English and Urdu here. It is also synonymous with its Mercedes Benz showroom. It has been a financial epicentre for many centuries and it continues to grow at a dizzying momentum. It is also famous for its silk and cotton production centers. It has offices of several multinational and Indian conglomerates such as Siemens, Volkswagen, Wockhardt, Videocon, Baxter, Wipro and many others. The industrial belts in this region are Chikhalthala MIDC, Shendra MIDC and Waluj MIDC.
Aurangabad is heading towards being a melting pot of human movement. Being a favoured tourist spot and with diversified industries, it is no wonder that it has several five-star hotels such as the Taj Residency, Ajanta Ambassador, The Lemon Tree among many others. It is the third city in Maharashtra to host an auto cluster. Over the recent years, it has also been a witness to the setting up of several foreign and nationalised banks.
It is important to note that Aurangabad is well-connected via air, rail and road.
